Accelerated Reader
1. STAR Reading Test – Each 9 weeks, students will take STAR Reading tests which assess their reading levels and give them
an individual reading range. For example, a student’s reading range may be a 3.1 to a 3.4 meaning they can read books on the early 3rd grade level.
2. AR Points
a. Based on the reading range given by the STAR Reading Test, students will be
assigned Accelerated Reader point goals. Each book that students read and test
on is worth a certain number of points, and the AR point goal
is the total number of points a student needs to earn in a 9 weeks.
b. Students will earn points based on the number of questions they answer correctly
on the AR test. Therefore, students will not earn the total number of points
possible on a test if they do not answer 100% of the questions correctly.
c. In order to meet their AR goals for the 9 weeks, students need to earn their
assigned number of AR points.
d. Students will also conference with their teachers about their progress
toward their AR goals.
3. Grading
a. AR will count as a test grade each 9 weeks. The grade will be the student's percent of their goal reached. If your child meets his/her goal, the grade will be a 100. If he/she meets 80% of the point goal, the grade will be an 80.
4. How You Can Help
a. Read with your student nightly.
b. MOST AR books need to be read for at least two nights in a row before students
are ready to test on them.
c. Ask students questions about the books they are reading.
d. Non-fiction books are especially difficult. Review vocabulary and specific content
with students at home.
*At the end of each 9 weeks, we will have a party to celebrate the students who have achieved their AR goals.*
